Magnesium Citrate Prep - NOT APPROPRIATE for those with kidney disease or kidney dysfunction.

You'll need in advance 2 bottles of Magnesium Citrate (10 oz each) and 4 Dulcolax pills (available over the counter).

The day before the procedure:

1.  Clear liquid diet all day. This includes liquids like coffee (with no milk), tea, clear juice, clear soda (like Sprite), lemon or lime Gatorade (Gatorade Ice flavor is best because it's not colored), clear or nearly clear broth with no food particles, and jello. Avoid red and darkly colored liquids. Pale colored liquids and jello are preferred. No solid foods and no milk.

2.  At 6 PM swallow two Dulcolax tablets and drink a 10oz. bottle of Magnesium Citrate (lemon or lime flavor is OK, but red colored magnesium citrate is not allowed). Magnesium Citrate is available over the counter.

3. Over the next hour drink three 8 oz. glasses of clear liquids

4.  Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

On the day of the exam:

1.  4 to 5 hours before the exam repeat step # 2 above (take 2 Dulcolax tablets and drink one bottle of Magnesium Citrate). Then over the next hour drink three 8 oz. glasses of clear liquids (but no red or dark colored liquids). Stop all liquids at least 3 hours before the exam.

2. Blood pressure pills (that you are due to take) can be taken the morning of the exam with 1-2 sips of water.

3. Someone you know should escort you home from the procedure. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home from the procedure.
